Chemical Models of Hot Molecular Cores
نویسنده
چکیده
We present the results of observational studies of a number of molecular clouds associated with ultracompact HII regions in regions of massive star formation. We derive molecular abundances and show that gas-phase-only chemical models of these regions are incapable of reproducing the observations. It appears that a rich chemistry occurs in the ice matrices frozen onto dust grains at high densities in the collapse of molecular clouds to form stars. The switch-on of a protostar can evaporate the ice matrices returning processed material to the gas phase. We present evidence that the surface chemistry can fractionate molecules in deuterium as well as form complex organic molecules.

The Chemistry of Phosphorus in Hot Molecular Cores
Hot molecular cores in star-forming regions are known to have gas-phase chemical compositions determined by the material evaporated from the icy mantles of interstellar grains, followed by subsequent reactions in the gas phase. Current models suggest that the evaporated material is rich in hydrogenated species. In this paper we consider the chemistry induced in a hot core by the release of phos...
متن کاملSulphur chemistry and evolution in hot cores
We compare the results of our JCMT spectral line survey of molecular gas towards ultracompact Hii regions with the predictions of models of sulphur chemistry in hot cores. We investigate the range of evolutionary models that are consistent with the observed physical conditions and chemical abundances, and see to what extent it is possible to constrain core ages by comparing abundances with the ...
متن کاملEstimation and reduction of the uncertainties in chemical models: Application to hot core chemistry
It is not common to consider the role of uncertainties in the rate coefficients used in interstellar gasphase chemical models. In this paper, we report a new method to determine both the uncertainties in calculated molecular abundances and their sensitivities to underlying uncertainties in the kinetic data utilized. The method is used in hot core models to determine if previous analyses of the ...
متن کاملThe DCN / HCN abundance ratio in hot molecular cores
We have observed the 3-2 transitions of DCN and HC 15 N in a number of hot molecular cores previously surveyed by us with the interesting result that the DCN/HCN ratio is low, a few times 10 −3 , in the hot cores. The abundance ratio of DCN/HCN is derived both 'on-core' and 'off-core' and, in general is larger at the 'off-core' positions. Comparision with chemical models of these sources indica...
متن کاملDiscovery of solid HDO in grain mantles ?
The observation of deuterium fractionation in the molecular gas in hot cores is currently interpreted as evaporation of deuterium-rich molecules from the icy grain mantles where they accumulated during the cold, dense cloud core stage. The predicted enrichment in deuterium of the ices has never been observed. This work provides the rst detections of solid HDO in grain mantles. We nd column dens...
متن کاملHot Molecular Cores and High-mass Star Formation
This review covers hot cores in the context of high-mass star formation. After giving an overview of chemical processes and diversity during high-mass star formation, it reviews the 'warm envelope' phase which probably precedes the formation of hot cores. Some recent deter-minations of the cosmic-ray ionization rate are discussed, as well as recent evidence for hot cores around low-mass stars. ...
